Born and raised in NYC, Matt Toder began his career in film in 2000 in the documentaries department of HBO. He later moved into commercial post production and edited TV commercials, short docs and music videos at a myriad of New York-based edit shops. In 2010, he switched over to media and began working at the Gawker Media blog Gawker.TV clipping TV shows, writing about television and creating viral-ready videos. When Gawker.TV shut down, he moved up to handle video at the Media level - working with the site leads of all of Gawker Media's blogs to create original video content that fit their sites. In 2012, he moved to Gawker proper to create original video content for that solely and write about television.
In 2014, Matt joined the newly created Original Video team at NBC News Digital as a producer. The team was originally designed to create all kinds of original video content for nbcnews.com and today.com. After being promoted to senior producer, Matt was tasked with building and shepherding content verticals Mach and THINK and altering the team’s direction into a pure documentary unit. In 2018, as Supervising Producer, he took over management of the team and oversaw all the editorial content the team produced. This also included setting the design look for the team as well as monitoring the analytics.
Under his leadership, NBC News Digital’s Original Video team received scores of award nominations, a handful of victories, and racked up over 100 million video starts on monetized platforms.
The videos on these pages represent the work that I’ve been most proud of over the last ten years, whether it is work that I’ve produced and edited as a video journalist, overseen in my role as Supervising Producer of NBC News Digital OV, or work that I did as a freelance producer/editor.
